Drawings Project 1

Villa Savoye.

Majority of what I will say is within the drawings, however this is just a bit extra.

I chose to do a site plan at 1:1000 to show how this building connects with environment around it. As you can see, the context is that the building is situated in the middle of nature, having so many trees nearby. From this drawing you can see the urban verse natural landscape and how Le Corbusier has placed his building in the middle of nature. Also a side not that can found is that this building is the only building in the area which does not have a pitched roof. This is an important part of the house as it allows for the roof garden, one of his five points of architecture.
The second set of drawings is a section and the Pilotis. I drew this section as i found this section cuts through one of the main features of the house, the ramp. It also shows four of the five points of architecture. I should probably name the five points before i head to far
1. ‘pilotis’ which is raising the house off the ground, therefore allowing more light and freeing up the ground floor.
2. Introduction of a roof garden which is private exterior space.
3. A free plan, developed through separation of load baring columns with party walls.
4. Maximising lighting through horizontal sliding windows.
5. The free façade, which is a vertical façade free from supports.

The pilotis plan has a curve that has been created by using the turning circle of a car. The entry way and the placement of the ramp is also formed by using the dimensions of a golden rectangle, found in the Parthenon, which Le Corbusier studied many temples prior to this.
The habitation plan shows the free plan easily. Walls have been created anywhere as they have no structural importance. The columns are not hiden alot of the time. In the master bedroom, there are numerous exposed columns.

Le Corbusier split this level into two, the private and public or cellular and open. Drawing a diagonal line from the kitchen to the opposite corner, this can be seen as one half is all the rooms, wereas the other is the open space which guests would see.
The next sheet has another section through the stairs which are an important feature of the building as they allow for movement throughout the house. The solarium is also on this sheet which shows the roof garden, one of the five points of architecture.

The axonometric gives people a better understanding of the house, and allows you to see all five points of architecture within the one drawing. This can not be done in any other drawing.

The final sheet shows two separate drawings by Le Corbusier, showing the house having stairs in it rather then the ramp. This showed that it was an important change to Le Corbusier as he distinctively changed this. Alot of people believe that the building has many features like the temples he studied before building this, hence some believe that the ramp was like a pathway to bring you closer to the heavens. Although there are alot of other elements in the house that suggest the relevance of a temple, I believe the ramp has been placed so that within the gradual incline, you experience the place and appreciate it alot more. The drawing i placed in the middle shows four points of architecture, plus the fundamental circulation throughout the house (being the stairs and ramp).

Like i said before, majority of what I have said is within the drawings, however this is just a bit extra

Completed Model

Completed Model as of the 20th March

Model as of the 16th of March

Model - End of Day 3 Group Work.

After three days of models, of which one day was jsut planning it all out, this is the stage we got to. We had nearly completed to ground floor. It was cut in half yet fit together nicely.

Model Progress - Start

This was the very start of the model. We cut all the walls out including doors before we started glueing down. We decided to make the model as one piece as much as possible, and then split it in half. We found this worked best.

Progress Work - Drawing Layout

For the layout of the Villa Savoye, I planned my drawings to look like they are above. From left to right, i have a site plan at 1:1000, then a section, garage floor plan, first floor plan, section, roofgarden all at 1:100. I then have an axonometric at 1:150
